What is JDBCRealm?

I am having Postgresql db and using tomcat 3.2.1.I am accessing the DB
using JDBC.The JDBC Driver for Postgresql is in my system classpath.
Then what this JDBCRealm mean?
What is the speciality about JDBCRealm?
