if you are on Windows NT,
under /WinNT/system32/drivers/etc there is a file named "hosts"
you can add in aliases there,
for example add in the line
127.0.0.1 my.domain.com
and save the file,
then do a
ping my.domain.com and you should get a reply from your own machine
