AccessLogValve remote ip address problem

I have an access log set up and (mostly) working for a context running in Tomcat 4.1.12. The %a 
replacement string only occasionally yields an ip address, more often shows up as a string of HTML 
from the served page.

I did not find this reported in the bug database or in elsewhere in the mailing lists. Information 
about this problem (and its solution) would be appreciated.
