I would suggest that you get clustered sessions working for these apps
and then share them across multiple tomcats.  This would allow you to
upgrade half your servers while the other half are happily serving pages
and then you throw the switch and they move to the upgraded cluster and
you can upgrade the other half.  This approach will save you LOTS of
headaches.
