I wouldn't say too complicated: it's sometimes impossible (DB-backed
servers), sometimes dangerous from a security perspective, and nearly
always a bad idea.

Yup, use that.  Either the ServletContext or the ClassLoader version of
getResource/getResourceAsStream is good.
