I had to copy the standard.jar file included with Tomcat as well as 
tools.jar from my j2sdk(1.4.2).
Is this normal?

And am getting the error:

org.apache.jasper.JasperException: The absolute uri: 
http://java.sun.com/jstl/core cannot be resolved
in either web.xml or the jar files deployed with this app.

From perusing the mail archives, I think this has something to do 
with a jar file not being in the proper place.
