Howdy, The API is still there: org.apache.catalina.startup.Embedded. It's not that hard to use, and it certainly wasn't removed. I think the embed distro helps by providing an Ant script or targets to configure embedded tomcat via JMX, but as I said already I haven't tried it myself.
