the last few days I've been playing with the new Tomcat Monitor. I plan to do more
tests in a more scientific way next week.

I thought others might find this interesting. Here is my setup

server:
redhat 9
1gb ram
athlon 1.8ghz
jdk1.4.2 ibm
jdk1.4.2 sun

client:
gateway laptop
1gb ram
centrino 1.4ghz
jdk1.5.0 sun
jdk1.4.2 sun

what I observed the last few days is the memory profile and garbage collection between
running Tomcat with IBM vs Sun VM is different. Generally, the GC on IBM vm appears
more smoothe than sun VM. In the past when remmy and I ran benchmarks, IBM vm beat Sun
by 10-30%. I don't have any conclusive proof the smooth-ness of GC improves
performance, but the data is intriguing.
