(Here's hoping that this response gets delivered in under 24hours this
time!)

I've spent a fair bit of time looking into Java and SNMP. It depends on
whether you want to pay for the priviledge... We need something that can be
used easily and quickly as we have a lot of commitment to older Perl/SNMP so
rewriting _can't_ take forever :

NB : You don't necessarily have to use JMX to use snmp - see below!!

The OpenNMS snmp stack seems very nice and is free!, but has a bugger of an
API - you can't do anything quick or dirty
The netsnmpj has native elements which affects cross platform development.
This is a _real_ shame as the netsnmp package is well respected ( and it's
free )
The Westhawk SNMP stack goes up to v3 and is free, but I wasn't keen on the
API
The Waremaker library is great - but when you tell the bloke who wrote it
that you are a company, he tries to sting you $1000 per year for something
that used to be $99 shareware

For fully feature commercial implementations, we have :

The Sun JDMK - expensive, but hey - it's Sun. Links the JMX and SNMP
elements neatly. Sadly, Sun in the UK have just really been quite rude to us
here, so we won't be buying this
Or the AdventNet website has some great looking stuff. They not only have a
pure SNMP library, but they also have a JMX version.

Personally, I really liked the WengSoft library - nice balance of ease of
use and flexibility.

A good jumping off point is :

http://ykjung.netian.com/Snmp/free.html

Lastly, there is a rather interesting library that can be used to link into
Log4J that can turn error messages into SNMP traps. Can't remember it
offhand - try googling. This has the advantage that you don't need to use
the JMX layer and the code comes with stubs for a few different libraries.

Have Fun..

Try Googling "Java SNMP open source".
Which returned, among other hits:

http://netsnmpj.sourceforge.net/
