It is more than likely a problem with the NPTL stuff that was included in RedHat 9.
Setting the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL environment variable to 2.4.1 will probably fix your problem, so in /etc/profile (or equivalent) add: export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1; There are plenty of details about this in the archives ...
