That certainly sounds like the source of memory problems: if each message kicks off a thread, and the threads don't get serviced quickly enough, you'll have a lot of objects laying around that are ineligible for GC. One more option: if you could somehow file the pertinent into in a database (or other data store), you could have another app that takes care of processing the large quantities e-mail.
