You don't append to the mbean descriptor file: You write your own mbean-descriptor file, jar it up with your Logger (or any other managed object) implementation, and modify the ServerLifeCycleListener Listener in your server.xml to get the additional descriptor file. Then drop your jar in the server/lib directory, and bounce Tomcat.
Off Topic: I'm kind of sorry to see that Logger interface go, even if I did just use them to wrap log4j loggers. I hope there's still a way to swallow output? I know, I know: not portable.
