OK, I understand.

The connectors have actually not changed much from later 4.1 version and
5.x.  They're nearly identical and in most places exchangeable.  But
depending on the complexity of your customization, I can see how even
minor changes can wreak havoc.

What was involved in your GDI Connector?  How many classes, interfaces,
attributes etc. beyond what ships with Tomcat?  The idea of adding a GDI
connector to Tomcat itself or as a contrib distribution is appealing to
me.
