There are numerous issues with past versions of Sun's Java that can cause hangs. Some of the 1.3.1, and 1.4.1 releases and one of the 1.4.2 releases had issues that can cause hangs. We've seen complete lockups in Tomcat and JBoss with 1.3.1_06, for example.
