Thanks for the reply. I just downloaded Tomcat 5.0.28 and tested my sample page with that too and I'm still getting the same exception.
Be sure that you don't insert a newline after the "</html" line as Tomcat can compile it with no problem. A simpler page that still throws the same exception would be the following two-line JSP page:
<html> </html
