You could also set the logging level to DEBUG for the category 'org.apache.jk'. That should give you a hex dump of the problem message with the exception.
The exception is when Tomcat is parsing the Content-Length header. However, since it is working on the retry (inferred because it isn't reported to the user), I'm guessing that Mladen is probably correct about the cause.
