Actually, what the OS's do is they keep the other file around until the file is closed, even though it's been deleted, it won't "go away" until the file is actually closed. The entry in the directory may be gone, but that actual data for the file is still around. When the file is finally closed, the system realizes there are no more references to it, and removes the actual data. Just clearing up the process..
