Getting access information

Does Tomcat have any kind of "hook" that can be used to get access 
information/statistics? I'm developing a monitoring system to help keep 
track of the state of the various servers that we anticipate using, and 
need this info.
Is there anyway to do it, apart from directly reading the log files?
