Using jconsole with tomcat running as service

I start tomcat 5.5.9 as a service providing the option 
-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote in the configuration panel. When I run 
jconsole, there are no java processes available to connect to. jps also 
displays nothing. Is this possible?
