You do not have to use an X-server for creating off-screen images if you install
"Toolkit pja" from http://www.eteks.com
It's free and does the trick.

Hi folks,
I need to use features of the AWT implementation for
creating off-screen
images from a servlet.
Using AWT requires the use of the host machine's
graphic system which in my
case is X11 as I am running RH Linux 6.2.
I would like to know how to grant the servlet
container access to the X11
server.
