Seriously, it does need to be documented. But, in terms of answering the
question that started this thread, it's the right thing to use. For
example, if you want to set the maximum memory of your JVM to 128
megabytes instead of the JVM default, you can set TOMCAT_OPTS to
"-Xmx=128m". Likewise, you can pass on system property definitions and
other stuff that you would include on a "java" command line, before the
name of the class to be executed.
If you look inside tomcat.sh, you'll see that the actual command that is
executed for a "start" command is something like:
$JAVACMD $TOMCAT_OPTS -Dtomcat.home=${TOMCAT_HOME} \
org.apache.tomcat.startup.Tomcat "$@"
For Tomcat 4, it works exactly the same except that it is CATALINA_OPTS
instead.
