newbie: problem with local and static variable

hi everybody,
i am currently trying o'reilly example of a counter with a
static variable and a local one to count access
unfortunately their behaviour is the same
so every access to my servlet is on the same instance of the
class
what is wrong in my configuration? i can't find the solution
in the doc and in archives
i know it must be silly but...
