Within the Apache httpd.conf we use the supplied default, custom and auth_ldap mods for authentication. Everything runs through Apache to the Tomcat 3.2 engine.
My testing of mod_webapp 1.0.1 version appear to confirm the the release note for Tomcat 4.0.1 that webapp hands off everything skipping any httpd.conf <directory ..tomcat401/webapp...> tags that have authentication options in them. However maybe I've missed something and there is some web.xml setting to make it not do so? If I haven't missed anything then has anyone heard a date of when it is expected that the mod_webapp setup will let the Apache authentication work like it does through mod_jk? If there is no plan to do so .. I'm not sure what my course of action will be.
