If there are no line breaks stored, then of course you will not get any out.
What database are you using? Maybe it doesn't allow line breaks in the VARCHAR type? What are you using to get the values IN to the database? Are you using some JDBC abstraction that strips the line breaks prior to INSERT? What DB driver are you using?
