An alternative to mod_jk is the warp connection ( webapp_module). However, if the experience of myself and many others on this mailing list is anything to go by do not use it in a Tomcat 4.03, Apache 1.3, NT 4.n configuration.
Tomcat hangs when serving anything other that the simplest of HTML pages: JSPs with graphics is a no no. Very disappointing considering all the hard work spent installing and configuring Apache and Tomcat.
