Don't mean to start with a RTM reply, but,
   Check out the man pages on 'magic'
   The 'magic' file itself is usually /etc/magic.
   It usually contains offset & other interesting info.

   Also try, 

      file mod_jk.so

   This will use the local magic file to determine the file type is
possible.
   If the system recognizes it as a shared library, it will say so.
