Yes, that is fine, although I'd upgrade to 4.0.4. It solves some classloading issues and there are other fixes that are worth the upgrade. If you really want to keep up with the times, I'd upgrade to 4.1.8 even. You will need to do it eventually since that is actively being developed where 4.0.x is all about bug fixes and no new features. The JDK is just fine. 1.4.x works great with Tomcat. No experience with using JDBC with SQL server except that I've heard the SQL Server driver that Microsoft provides is moderately buggy.
