thanks i'm checking my jars now; $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext did not have the
class
and i will definitely check tools.jar and xercesImpl.jar.

xerces2.0.2 does not have xerces.jar or crimson.jar. from what i read, the
classes in both

are placed in xercesImpl.jar

The xerces that is delivered with tomcat
should be okay (at least it is for 4.0.3).

To view the content of a jar use either
$JAVA_HOME/bin/jar tvf <jarfile>
or use an ordinary zip tool.

Are you shure that that you don't have an jar file
on your system that contains the w3c classes that
might be found before xerces ?

There might be other jar files that contain this
classes. Have look espcially at jar files in
$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext.
