For Apache 1.3.26, I don't think you have a choice. As far as I know, you are limited to mod_jk, which is AJP13.
Anyone who has successfully built the 4.1.10 connectors (JK and JK2) for Apache 1.3.26 and 2.0.40, please let me know. I've already spent several hours trying to do it, without success.
