Although there are those few gotchas when moving from 4.0.4 to 4.1, 4.1.x has much better performance and IMHO is more stable than 4.0.x. And if you use JSP there will be a huge improvement in performance for JSP pages.
I have had Tomcat 4.1.x in production for 6 months with Jasper 1, and just recently upgraded it to Jasper 2. This is on a site with > 500k page views per month.
