if you find netstat confusing then try the following test
% telnet localhost 8080 If the telnet connects then your tomcat is binding to 8080 but something is going wrong. Unfortunately failure to connect doesn't give any indication of what is wrong since there are too many variables that could have prevented this test from passing.
