It sounds like you are trying to invoke AWT or Swing calls, and tomcat was started via SSH session.
You need to export a valid X11 DISPLAY= variable, or use JDK 1.4.0 or higher and specify -Djava.awt.headless=true in your startup options for Tomcat. George Sexton MH Software, Inc.
