Thanks John, That is most instructive and helpful. We'll move forward with jk2 for now having come so far down the path, but from what you're saying converting to vanilla jk is not so tough as it seemed.
We've actually located the compile issue we were facing with ant. It was due to many of the java src files being truncated in our java Tomcat Connectors folder. I suspect this has something to do with Solaris' tar which we were attempting to use through the first stages of this installation. We've now installeg gnu tar which apparently resolves all the checksum issues that Solaris tar throws up.
