If I understand well, you have to define DNS entry for each host, all defined as the same IP address. When your browser uses http://host1 it will be resolved as the unique IP you have on your server, but in the http request the hostname will be written. This way Tomcat will direct the request to the "host1" virtual host as defined in server.xml, and therefore to the right appBase.
