Well, ah, oops....I seem to have shuffled things around since building my test servlets, I have added a CLASSPATH pointing to servlets.jar in $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib and all is well. For this step, at least. Ant builds.

JAVA_HOME points to /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.0 and I have successfuly compiled a HelloWorld servlet; so javax is available to my system, and it does appear to get into the classpath by virtue of JAVA_HOME. So why can't ant build mod_jk.so?
