Sounds like you've got a version of Log4J that Tomcat doesn't like. You've probably upgraded one of them without upgrading the other. It sounds like a Java error where the version of Log that Log4J implements is not the one Tomcat is using.
I'd reccommend making sure you have two versions that work together. The two latest stable ones should work. (Disclaimer: I haven't tried it, so don't sure me if it doesn't!)
