URGENT: many apache processes

hi,

this night switched a site online. it worked fluidly, but now (i guess the hit-rate is much higher) more and more apache-processes are listed, and the log of tomcat says

Feb 2, 2003 2:40:09 PM org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket processConnection
INFO: connection timeout reached
Feb 2, 2003 2:40:09 PM org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket processConnection
INFO: Server has been restarted or reset this connection

many many times.

any guess why this is?

tomcat's httpd is serving the pages fast, but with mod_jk and apache it can't berly surf.
