Resolved this issue by setting the CATALINA_HOME explicitly in tomcat4.conf instead of trying to override this variable for each use of dtomcat4. Probably better practice anyway since the install directory does not really change... this is how it is done in the "out-of-the-box" install anyway, so the problem was certainly mine. Doh!
