On linux you could do something like: ps aux | grep tomcat | wc -l
ps aux | grep ora | wc -l ps aux | grep ora | grep LISTENER | wc -l If the first one comes back positive (ie >0) then tomcat is running. If the second one comes back positive then oracle is running. If the third comes back positive then you have an oracle listener running.
