Hello Mike, If by "newer and more refined" you mean "not compatible with jdk's previous to Sun's 1.4 jdk with fewer features than Log4j", then you are absolutely correct.
Seriously, Log4j is far more capable than JDK1.4 logging and is independent of your favorite JDK.
