So what you're comparing here is and Object of type Date and an Object of
type Class.  Those are not the same.  However if you had something like
this:

        class DateZ extends Date {
                public DateZ() {
                        super();
                }
        }

        DateZ dz = new DateZ();
        if ( dz instanceof Date ) {
                System.out.println( "DateZ is instance of type Date" );
        }
