Howdy, Craig already provided the right answer (as always ;)) and some options to address your need. I would suggest one more option: don't re-invent the wheel, and use a logging toolkit with email support, e.g. log4j. You will have fine-grained control over the content, format, and conditions for sending emails, without writing any proprietary code such as your own logger, that you would have to maintain.
