Hi Alberto, I have been working with Applets since 1995 (don't laugh) and never had an issue with reading a file from the directory of the (Web or App) server the Applet was downloaded from. Just know that there are security issues involved if you try to read files not in the same directory (or sub directories) of the Web or App server. And yes I am using Tomcat and having no issues with reading files under the conditions specified above.
