Hi manchi,
As of Tomcat 4.x the variable is called "CATALINA_HOME".
If you don't set it, the startup script ("startup.bat" on Windows systems)
will try to guess it:

rem Guess CATALINA_HOME if not defined
if not "%CATALINA_HOME%" == "" goto gotHome
set CATALINA_HOME=.
===================
