Programming 101.
I'd rather have something defined once and refer to it a dozen times then have to define it a dozen times. As soon as you upgrade, you have to change it in 12 places instead of one.
Some people have lots of things that use Java besides Tomcat, thus something like JAVA_HOME comes in handy.

yes, I know that, but I just wondered why everyone defines them as environment variables.. I see it more tidy to define them in configuration files...
