You can kludge it easily. In general, when a pcmcia card isn't found,
look for the message when you do "pcmcia start" about what it thinks it
saw. Do pcmcia stop, then edit the /etc/pcmcia/config file on tomsrtbt.
In this case, you would find the section that says:
card "3Com 3c589D Ethernet"
version "3Com Corporation", "3C589D"
bind "3c589_cs"
and _add_ a section like:
card "3Com 3c589E Ethernet"
version "3Com Corporation", "3C589E"
bind "3c589_cs"
