You are right, I'll stick with the simple version.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to have the time to dig at the level that you
are, I'm just going to slap in the fix that seems to solve the immediate
problem, then add a to-do task to upgrade the libc as many levels as
necessary for the bug to not occur.  The code that segfaults is in
namelist.c in ftp://ftp.toms.net/rb/add-ons/pax-2.2-beta11-patched.tar.gz,
('patched' does not refer to this issue, but to a previous patch), I think
the problem is at line 355.
