I'm not sure on the details with mkisofs etc., I use windows software to
burn CDs and it just asks me for the image file name, I use the GoldenHawk
software for audio CDs and ECDC from Adaptec for Data CDs.  I do know that
you can do the tomsrtbt bootable cd with linux tools, but I've never done
it myself.

CDROM is not like a hard disk.  There are several FAQs you should
read.  It is more like an LP, with a spiral groove, 75 frames per second,
2352 bytes per sector, 16 bit samples, 44100 samples per second, two
channels, that is red book, then there is orange blue yellow etc. that
puts 2048 in the 2352 using more ECC (there is already some ECC in red
book), then there is iso9660 and rock ridge and joliet and packet writing
and lead ins and lead outs and inter track stuff.  There isn't a boot
sector.  The ElTorito spec addresses bootable CDs.
