 I still have a couple of 386s in production use (mail server and 
 router, at home).  It would be inconvenient to have to build new
 kernels and repack special root/boot images for them.  However,
 if the savings is worth it; then, it's worth it.  At that point
 a fork (two different images) would be good --- but that just
 shifts the inconvenience from us back to you (which sucks; there's
 only one of you).

 How many other retro geeks are still using any 386s or 486SXs?
 1%, 2%, I don't know.
