This looks like it's done it (the jury's still out, but my first tests
look good).  Note that when I recompiled gnu-tar from the sources at
gnu.mit.edu, it did *not* work; the version in the add-ons directory
(note for newbies like me: this is at
<http://sunsite.utk.edu/ftp/pub/mini-linux/tomsrtbt/add-ons/>; thus far,
I have not found an explicit link to this anywhere in the docs) *does*
work.
